Keep Brownwood Beautiful is ready to try a new program. It is called Litter Pickers. Basically, we have taken some time to drive around Brownwood and all the litter that surrounds and is amongst us stands out quite clearly. It is ugly and unwelcoming to see this throughout our town.
With the Litter Picker program, KBB will select and announce a site to clean each month. A day will then be selected and hopefully people will show up to participate. Areas that are selected will be throughout the town. To add an incentive, each Litter Picking day a small prize will be randomly selected from the list of people who show up.
Litter is misplaced solid waste - blown by wind and traffic and carried by water. It travels until trapped by a curb, building or fence. Once litter has accumulated, it invites people to add more.
While roadside litter has decreased by 6% since 1969, we still have a long way to go to eradicate it... According to Keep America Beautiful, the primary sources for litter are:
- Household trash at the curbside
- Dumpsters used by businesses
- Loading docks
- Construction and demolition sites
- Uncovered trucks
- Motorists
- Pedestrians
Litter is the result of individual behavior—choosing to litter or being careless in the handling of waste. This why we all need to make an effort to prevent litter and to pick up litter when we se it. It is not only unsightly; it is hazardous to our health as well as wildlife and water systems.
So, watch for our Litter Picker days and join us in the effort to clean up Brownwood…it is actually a fun and rewarding activity.
Keep it Green. Keep it Clean.
